Faith and Mental Health

Thank you for visiting this page.

There are a few things we want you to know from the outset.

Your story matters.

You may have no religious background. You may consider yourself spiritual but not religious. Whether you’re curious, disillusioned, suspicious, or something else, we know there are a lot of different feelings that are attached to spiritual conversations. We hope you feel respected at every stage of your journey.

We have stories, too.

This is written from the perspective of our experiences. We’ve all been impacted deeply by the Christian faith. There’s a million different ways to define that, but for all of us, the common denominator is God’s love expressed in Jesus. This is why Sweet Deeds exists.

Life is about connecting.

We agree with the famed physician, Gabor Mate, that trauma does severe injury to our sense of connection. When we are connected to others, to ourselves, and even to God, life works. It is meaningful and fulfilling.

But when connection breaks down, all manner of chaos ensues: anxiety, depression, despair, addiction, abuse, anger, rage, hopelessness. We harm others and we harm ourselves.

Your therapeutic journey, no matter the particular approach, is really about re-establishing connection. We understand the Bible to be full of examples that convey a central truth: there is a God, and in love, this God pursues connection with each of us.

No matter what our past, no matter the mistakes we’ve made or ways we’ve failed (or the ways people have failed us), the love of God seeks to restore us into right relationship - with ourselves, with one another, and with God.

This is a free gift offered to every single person through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was not only an amazing example of love, but the very definition of love.

On a wooden cross, Jesus gave his life for you and me and every broken, precious soul. We can all attest to the impact that receiving this gift and seeking to follow Jesus has made in our lives, and we feel honored to be able to share this hope with you.

If you resonate with what you’ve read and you feel ready to take a small step of faith right now, you can say this simple prayer of faith.

1 John 4:7-11

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
